- Abstract
Vector tiles are epresentations of geographic data covering a rectangular extent. They are similar to raster map tiles regarding its purpose, which is to give support to quicker map services, but they differ in a fundamental aspect: instead of providing a prefixed image with a defined portrayal for a particular geograhic data, they contains vector data which cam be modified in client applications. They are representations designed for viewing and thereforetheir application context is related with viewing services, not with download services. This article analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of vector tiles and it makes some tecnical proposals for the creation of INSPIRE vieweing services based on them. Those proposals are now been analysed by the permanent technical subgroup of the INSPIRE Maintenance and Implementing Group (MIG), in particular how to implement a server supporting the INSPIRE profile of WMTS 1.0.0 with vector tiles taking into account the implied potential problems. In addition, a software protoytype is presented to validate the proposals.
