- Title
Legionella -- a case for culture.
- Authors
Lück, Christian
- Abstract
The author discusses the importance of culture in the diagnoses of Legionella infections. He recalls that a pneumonia outbreak among the participants of a 1976 convention of the American Legion in Pennsylvania has led to the discovery of the Legionella bacteria as the cause of the disease. Culture is cited as the gold standard among diagnostic methods under which buffered charcoal yeast extract (BCYE) agar and antibiotics are utilized. He stresses that culture yields 100% specificity and is not very expensive.
