- Abstract
The approaching demographic wave of aging baby boomers will bring unprecedented growth in the number of Americans with mental health or substance use disorders, all of whom will need services over the coming decades. And the number of individuals with Alzheimer's Disease (5.2 million currently) is predicted to more than double by the year 2040 to 8.4 million. Yet there are fewer than 1,800 geriatric psychiatrists in the United States and that numbers stands to decrease. What will be the impact of so many elders with mental illness, and how can we go about treating them with existing resources? We can look to other countries, where trained community health outreach workers have successfully provided general primary care services to those in need. We also can look to technology, including mobile health technologies, to provide screening and treatment, as well as the ACA's numerous provisions to improve access to geriatric mental health care.
