- Abstract
In this paper the author suggests some reflections on a special type of transference resistance in narcissistic patients: mass indifference towards the analyst. Such is the case of Nicholas, who used indifference to combat the fear of breakdown aroused in him by the transference. The state of indifference also served to protect the defensive idealization of the ego. Indifferent to the analyst, the narcissistic ego maintains its distance with the help of imaginary constructions designed to preserve a sense of omnipotent self-sufficiency. In Nicholas's case, these consisted of idealized representations of himself and of what the analysis, and the perfect analyst, should be. Oscillating between the ego ideal and the ideal ego, this kind of defensive idealization reinforces the emotional gap between the analysand and the analysand, shutting out the transference.
