- Abstract
Community-Acquired pneumonia (CAP) is considered a public health problem worldwide. Despite the multiple elements developed in order to reduce its prevalence, there are still several factors that are associated to it and that do not allow for its stabilizations strategies have been developed for the care of these patients, among which are the methods of prediction of severity and mortality, the assessment of severity and decisions on the place of care for patients with CAP. These strategies are also crucial for the safety of patients and the adequate allocation of resources. Late admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) has been associated with increased mortality in CAP. The objective of the present revision was the comprehensive evaluation of the basic concepts related to CAP and the main instruments that have been analyzed in order to determine which has a better predictive profile in these patients. Furthermore, to compare the prognostic value of the pneumonia severity index (PSI), severity score for CAP (CURB-65) and the "expanded CURB-65" and its role in the prediction of mortality and the need for admission to the ICU of patients with CAP.
