- Title
RAISE THE ROOF (AND EVERYTHING ELSE).
- Abstract
The article reports on Operation "Rialto," an approach to managing "acqua alta," or flood events in Venice, Italy. The Rialto project, which is an alternative to building barriers to block flood waters, will raise buildings up to one meter through the use of hydraulic equipment to be placed under foundations. The proposal is said to be different from the "Mose" project, or the "Moses" project, which involves the construction of 78 inflatable barriers which will rise out of water during floods in order to block the inlets that connect the Venetian Lagoon to the Adriatic Sea. According to the Rialto project leader Roberto Zago, the high cost of the project, which is estimated to be 2,500 euros per square meter, will be offset by the restoration of Venetian buildings to their original height.
