- Abstract
In this article I will investigate why William James refuses consciousness as a substantial entity. While doing this, I will take consider James's studies in psychology and in philosophy in which he calls his thinking as radical empiricism. The outline of my aritcle will develop in questioning his conception of consciousness. Furthermore James's, who is known as a pragmatist, usage of pragmatic method is important for my article. Although he differentiates his pragmatism and radical empiricism, the relation between them is important. In this article I will explain these relations in terms of his rejection of consciousness. Accordingly as a pihlosopher of the 19th century I think that William James is important in the reaction to Kantian heritage of the exaltation of rationality and in the realm of life philosophy. Thoroughout this attitude I will aim at explaining why James refuses consciousness.
