- Abstract
Conservation Units (CUs) are territorial space and their environmental resources established by the government, with protection guarantees. State Parks require a Buffer Zone (BZ), surrounding the CU where human activities are subject to norms and specific restrictions to decrease negative impacts. One of the difficulties for the protection of natural environments is the community´s perception and values. Researches on environmental perception are educational and transforming instruments when they provide conditions for humans-environment relationships. Current paper diagnoses the environmental perception of the community surrounding the State Park Vitório Piassa in Pato Branco PR Brazil, and its social agents. A 500m-buffer zone was established and its use and occupation were classified. A questionnaire (n=143) was applied and a descriptive and multivariate analysis was undertaken. Answers were different according to classes of analysis (gender, age, residence, family income, schooling and profession), with special reference to residence. Administrative organs and the population should be made aware that the use of the Park implies the conservation of nature, environmental education, ecotourism and the contemplation of nature. It should not merely aim at mass leisure with great environmental impact.
