- Abstract
This research focuses on the effects of modern economic conditions on the values, expectations, and the family structure of the Inuit. Operating from a conflict perspective, this research assembles assorted knowledge of Inuit family values, and expectations in order to gain insight into how changes from a traditional subsistence-based economic system to a modern, cash-based economic system has influenced changes in the Inuit family structure and value system thus altering traditional culture. The research discussion presented demonstrates how the dominant macroeconomic system (based on a cash-based global economy) has adversely influenced the fundamental agent of family that defines Inuit culture and diversity of thought. Overall, the paper presents a greater understanding and respect for the interconnections between family structure and value systems within economies and provides a valuable lesson and unified framework for approaching the wellness of culture, community and society.
