- Abstract
The period of military rule in Greece (1967-1974) coincided with a time that was significantly shaped by the bipolar world order and the Cold War. This period is often regarded retrospectively as one of the key episodes for the good relationship between Germans and Greeks in the contemporary history: The support in the Federal Republic made it possible for the Greek democratic opposition to establish itself on west German soil with its own media, while the German federal government often intervened in favour of resistance activists imprisoned in Greece. Nevertheless, if one examines the aspects of the bilateral relations during the military dictatorship more closely, it soon becomes clear that the West German foreign policy was much more ambivalent than a mere glance at the support for the Greek opposition would suggest - in this context, the Realpolitik and strategic goals of West German foreign policy were of central significance.
