- Abstract
Karagöz, which is a Turkish shadowplay, was a significant part of the social life before communication tools like cinema and theater. However, origin of this shadowplay has been researched by various researchers, both Turkish and National, and there is still a question about its time and place. Visual symbols are communicative tools that provide information about the civilizations in which they are created, and provide recognition, dating and awareness. In this sense, the symbols, works and images produced by the Turkish society have the potential to give ideas for the source of the Turkish shadow theater. Some visual symbols which are produced with different methods and techniques in the historical process and which are evaluated as works of art today can give information about the Karagöz play with their imaginative features and traces they carry. In all the political and social structures that bring the present Turkish presence to the point of view, the traces of "Karagöz" can be seen in verbal and visual artistic materials which are produced by the experiences and cultural interactions that they experience on the migration routes, or a formal link can be established. The traces of the figures in the Karagöz games in the visual sense can be seen in some of the paintings, miniatures, frescoes, sculptures, carpets and kilims. When these materials and visual symbols in different fields are brought together by a multidisciplinary approach, the traces of Karagöz's origin can be found in different places. Even though there are no sources, informations or documents about the link between Karagöz and these traces, it is important that these and other similiar features has been brought up by various researches. In this research, such visual documents and similarities about Karagöz were discussed and a historical comprehension was made for the source of Karagöz and its origin in Turkey with evaluations and interpretations.
