- Abstract
The goal of this research project is to study issues and strategies with respect to information management regarding water utilization. The residential water softener industry was the focus so as to demonstrate information issues that drives the dynamics of such situation. This research provides significant insights for public utilities to manage their information, including such aspects as messaging, channels, and strategies. Research identifies that there are three key constituents involved with residential water softeners: water utilities, the private industry, and the consumers. Due to poor information management and conflicting interests, misguided decisions by the constituents contribute to increasing levels of salinity in water resources, which dramatically increase the cost of water. Project analysis indicates that significant reduction in salinity levels can be obtained if proper information management techniques are implemented and individual interests for each constituency are re-aligned, with no major compromise required.
