- Title
Is the Swedish Welfare State A Free Lunch?
- Authors
BERGH, ANDREAS
- Abstract
The article explains the state of the welfare sector in Sweden, which was argued by Peter H. Lindert through his 2004 book "Growing Public." Lindert referred to the system as a free lunch, wherein the system scopes factors including unemployment compensation, housing subsidies and poverty relief. The author counters it with reforms in Sweden associated with the social welfare sector from 1985 to 1997 including the deregulation of the credit and currency market, the legalization of private, for-profit recruitment agencies and the launching of vouchers.
