This essay presents several initiatives and efforts made by the U.S. government and citizens to cope up with the epidemic AIDS. He explores several programs enacted in the U.S. to fight AIDS such as the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act, which was signed by former U.S. President George H. W. Bush in 1989. He also discusses the pioneering work of doctor David Ho with HIV antiretroviral medications, which made him the "Time" Person of the Year in 1996.
