- Abstract
The article focuses on the complexity of mainstream male culture in the United States. Homophobia has stigmatized male homosexuality, labeling certain traits as "gay," which in turn has promoted and maintained a cultural divide between straight and gay men. The Bravo television program, "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," revealed how gay men could change the rules that define the straight man: the "metrosexual" became acceptable. The post-straight male gained prominence in the 90's, a time when presidential candidate Bill Clinton courted the gay vote. The post-straight male identity is complicated by racial and ethnic differences, by the association of gayness with femininity, and the persistence of homophobia, which can be a force to ensure male conformity as well as a force against homosexuality.
