- Abstract
The article focuses on English novelist and screenwriter Christopher Isherwood. The 20th-century author was important as one of the first gay writers to be read by a wide audience. His semi-autobiographical work, "The Berlin Stories" were adapted in the play "I Am a Camera" and in the musical "Cabaret". He became a naturalized citizen and lived in California until his death in 1986. In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of his birth, the Huntington Library is promoting an exhibition, "Christopher Isherwood: A Writer and His World". Isherwood developed relationships with poet W. H. Auden and artist Don Bachardy. He worked as an adjunct professor at California State University and emerged as a leader in the gay movement. His spiritual interests included the Hindu philosophy of Vedanta. The exhibition will introduce Isherwood to those who are not unfamiliar with his work with literary materials, portraits by Bachardy, and documentary film footage.
