- Abstract
This paper presents some judgments of the Venetian Quarantia Criminale, passed between 1475 and 1478. The information has been gleaned from a Paduan source containing some document lists of ducal magistrates, who were sent in the city for issues concerning the Studium. Such judgments, of remarkable interest for the relationship between the Paduan Studium and the Venitian governement, were passed through the agency of the Avogadori di Comun, one of the two judiciaries of appeal in Venice. The actions of Quarantia, the Venetian supreme judiciary court, concerned the conduct of some professors and the assignment of those substitutions contested by students for infringements of the procedure ratified by the University statutes. In one case, the Quarantia Criminale dealt also with the incorporation of a member in the Board of philosophical and medical doctors. After a sequence of conflicts of jurisdiction among different authorities of the Venetian state, the court passed a judgement also on some arguments within the student universities.
