- Abstract
This article analyzes the three homicide cases that were recorded in the diary of Du Fengzhi Du, the Magistrate of Guangning County, in Guaungdong, China. The first case deals with a bandit leader who was captured and killed by a local nobleman. The second case deals with a woman accused of killing her husband’s concubine. The third case deals with a man charged with murdering three of his relatives. From these three cases, the author makes the following conclusions about Qing social conditions: 1) Qing law was not always followed during judicial proceedings; 2) field investigations were not always conducted, and many times the goal of the magistrate was to pacify the people rather than carry out justice; and 3) local noblemen, positioned between common people and the magistrate, held an important role in the social justice system.
