- Title
THE JAMESTOWN EXPERIMENT.
- Authors
WILLIAMS, TONY
- Abstract
The article discusses the English settlers who established the first permanent British colony in America at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. The author asserts that the settlers were not assisted financially by the British monarchy, and that the success of the settlement depended upon the financial risks taken by the settlers. The article examines the initial experiences of the colonists, which the author argues were characterized by death, frustration with an authoritarian government model, and a lack of individual initiative. The author states that Jamestown began to succeed when the colonists applied the principles of entrepreneurship, respect for private property, and capitalism. The author examines the significance to the Jamestown settlement of Virginia colony governor Thomas Gates.
