- Title
Scrooge's Bed Curtains and the Prospect of Discovery.
- Authors
Stockstill, Ellen
- Abstract
This essay offers a close reading of Scrooge's bed curtains in A Christmas Carol and posits that Charles Dickens uses the curtains strategically to heighten the stakes of Scrooge's ghostly encounters and to cue to readers that the man's bed will be a principal site of discovery. Using Victorian housekeeping manuals, Dickens's canon of writing, and the histories of curtains in the home and on the stage, the article illuminates a rich tapestry of meaning imbedded in this common household object.
