- Abstract
The article discusses the archaeological significance of stone flakes, which are said to be invaluable for gaining an accurate picture of a given culture's stone age technology. Distinctions between various types of flakes and their uses are discussed, such as scrapers, knives and borers. The typologies into which such tools are divided are also discussed, such as Clactonian and Levalloisian. The use Clactonian, but not Levalloisian techniques by Native American cultures is discussed, and some of the distinguishing characteristics of each type are noted.
