- Abstract
Between 1900 and 1949, the pedagogical journal Popotnik published a number of articles about the importance of education in hygiene. The article limits itself to articles by Slovenian authors in the journal, which offer an insight into the development or rather decline of the idea of hygiene. Although these articles cannot offer a wider picture of the development of hygiene teaching, they offer an interesting insight into the past and the often lively views of Slovenian teachers on the importance of lessons in hygiene. In the first period, at the time of Austria-Hungary, there was a notable push to establish hygiene education. During World War One, there was more emphasis on combating smoking and alcohol, especially in the light of the war conditions. The time of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenians and Yugoslavia had specific general content about hygiene, the dangers of alcohol, sex education and various diseases, but there was still serious ignorance about the importance of washing in the countryside. The journal did not appear during World War Two, while in the short period of its existence after the war there was only one article about the struggle against tuberculosis.
