- Title
Prion agents (1st section).
- Abstract
Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a prion disease that affects deer, elk, and moose. It has been detected in several countries, but there is no evidence of transmission to humans. However, there is a theoretical concern if human-adapted strains were to appear. The disease can be transmitted through bodily fluids and tissues of infected animals, but there is no treatment or pre-symptomatic test available. Another prion disease called variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) is discussed in the document, including its transmission through blood transfusions and plasma-derived products. The document also mentions the genetic factors that influence susceptibility to vCJD and the lack of effective treatments or prevention measures.
