- Abstract
This article discusses health inequities in medical documentation that affect people with skin of color, specifically focusing on nonspecific alopecia International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes. The study conducted a review of dermatology cases within the Indiana University Health system and found that people with skin of color were often misdiagnosed or assigned less severe disease codes, leading to underdiagnosis and decreased prevalence of certain diseases. The study highlights the need for improved medical charting and the development of new ICD codes to address these inequities and disparities in documentation, research, and clinical care for people with skin of color.
