- Abstract
The importance and impact of smart technology on the lives of older adults The exponential growth of smart technology coincides with a high increase of the elderly population. The aim of the study was to examine the impact of smart technology on the quality of life of older adults and how the use of smart technology shaped their lives during the epidemic of Covid-19. In order to obtain data nine people aged 65+ were interviewed using semi-structured questionnaires. The answers were transcribed verbatim and analysed using the content analysis method (inductive approach). Qualitative descriptive method was used. After transcription, four main themes were developed: (1) Motivation for learning the usage of smart technology; (2) Negative characteristics of the use of smart technology among older adults; (3) Difficulties in using smart technology; (4) The impact of the Covid-19 epidemy on smart technology use. Many additional opportunities in their daily lives were recognised as a positive reason for learning the use of smart technology. It enables them to keep in touch with friends and relatives, especially when an illness makes personal contacts impossible as was the case during the Covid-19 epidemic. Furthermore, smart technology is seen as something that can make many everyday tasks easier for them, although it is still under-used. Several negative features of using smart technology and the difficulties of learning how to use it were also mentioned. With more support from family and friends, and with the help of targeted courses, the knowledge and use of smart technology could increase among older adults.
