- Abstract
The occurrence of depressive symptoms and depression among older persons significantly contributes to the lower quality of life and higher mortality. Depression is also associated with a lack of will to meaning and a loss of will to live. In preventing depressive symptoms and their consequences, physical activity can be a protective factor. The purpose of the study was to determine the incidence of depressive symptoms and the association with the will to meaning and physical activity among the elderly. Data collection was based on a quantitative research approach. The study involved 29 older persons (10 men and 19 women), the average age was 84.53 years (SD = 6.59 years). The PIL-Purpose in life test, CES-D-The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale and additional questionnaire on demographic data and physical non-activity were used to determine the will to meaning and symptoms of depression. The results have shown no statistically significant difference in the perception of meaning and the incidence of depressive symptoms among physically active and inactive elderly. Both groups received an extremely low average score on the PIL test (88.31; SD = 19.28) and a high average on the CES-D test (17.96; SD = 6.12), indicating the experience of a deep living emptiness and increased presence of depressive symptoms regardless of the level of physical activity. Physical activity among care receivers at home for the elderly did not appear to be a protective factor in alleviating depressive symptomatic. The results point the need to introduce certain psychosocial measures at the care centres for older persons.
