- Abstract
A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) presents promising findings on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in obstetric ultrasonography in resource-limited settings. The study shows that novice users, with no prior training in obstetric ultrasonography, using a low-cost AI tool can estimate gestational age (GA) as accurately as trained sonographers using high-specification machines. The AI-enabled device demonstrated greater accuracy than commonly used standards for GA assessment in resource-limited settings. However, there are logistical, technical, and training challenges to consider in implementing AI-driven obstetric ultrasonography solutions in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The study also highlights the potential role of AI in advancing obstetric ultrasonography and obstetric care more broadly, but cautions that it should be implemented within a broader healthcare system with trained professionals and adequate resources.
