- Abstract
The article describes the development of woven biomimetic implants for the treatment of tendon and ligament defects. Researchers from textile engineering and the University Hospital Dresden have developed a flexible technology for the production of graded, biomimetic, and long-term absorbable implants. These implants are based on biocompatible silk yarns with a collagen functionalization of the implant surface. Through the slow degradation of the implants, the body's own cells are intended to populate the implants and restore the natural state. The woven implants with graded structural zones were successfully coated with collagen and populated with tendon cells and stem cells to support cell ingrowth. The results show a high potential for the use of these implants as tendon and ligament replacements.
