- Abstract
The article discusses the significance and impact of Allan Ramsay's ballad opera, The Gentle Shepherd. The opera was highly popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, but its popularity has declined in recent years. The opera explores themes of class, gender, Scotland's place in the Union, and humanity's place in nature. This new edition of the opera, published by Edinburgh University Press, provides a comprehensive and readable version of the text, making it accessible to researchers and students. However, the high price of the edition may limit its accessibility to nonspecialist readers. The article suggests that this edition has the potential to inspire a more affordable commercial edition and revive interest in this classic piece of 18th-century literature.
