- Abstract
This article highlights the Latin American Theatre Festival held in Cordoba, Argentina, from October 18 to 26, 1986. The officially invited companies (those who had their expenses paid) were from the five countries that border Argentina: Bolivia, Brazil (represented by two groups), Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Also representing Latin America were groups from Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, and two groups from Puerto Rico. Twelve companies participated from the host country: three national groups and others representing Santa Fe, Buenos Aires, and Cordoba. Other companies came from Canada. Italy, Poland, and Wales. All told, nearly 30 groups from 14 countries performed plays during the 9- day festival. In addition, there were performances by a Bolivian ballet company, an Argentinian tango company, and a musical group from Italy. Finally, the International Video Theatre showed tapes from Spain, Russia, Germany, and other countries. Scenic designer and director of the festival Rafael Reyeros intended that the general theme, at least for the official groups, would be "the search for Latin American identity" and that these groups, to be comprised mainly of young people, would perform works dealing with the experiences and problems in their homelands since the politically tumultuous '70s. For whatever reason, this intention was only haphazardly realized. Several directors, in fact, disclaimed knowledge of any official theme or subject matter.
