- Abstract
This article explores the challenges of identifying and addressing pain in infants and young children, who have limited means of expressing their discomfort. If left untreated, pain in children can have lasting effects, such as anxiety, depression, and heightened sensitivity to pain. The article suggests that pharmacists can contribute to the management of children's pain by observing their behavior and looking for signs of distress. Pain scales and non-pharmacological techniques, like breastfeeding and swaddling, can also be employed to alleviate pain. However, if a child displays concerning symptoms or does not respond to pain medication, it is advisable to seek medical advice. Chronic pain is a prevalent issue among children, affecting around one in five. It can significantly impact their quality of life and result in long-term consequences. Common forms of chronic pain in children include abdominal pain, headaches, and musculoskeletal conditions. However, there is a lack of awareness and information about pediatric chronic pain among both the community and healthcare professionals. Early identification and personalized treatment strategies are essential for effectively managing chronic pain in children.
