- Abstract
A biography is presented for Jane Cumming, who inspired the character Mary Tilford of the play "The Children's Hour" by Lillian Hellman. Jane was born circa 1796 as the illegitimate child of Scotsman George Cumming, eldest son of Dame Helen Cumming-Gordon. After George's death in 1800 while working for the East India Company, Jane was transported to Scotland. In 1809, she told her grandmother that two of her teachers were lesbians leading to a libel case in 1811. She married in 1818 and died in 1845 leaving three children.
