SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW, SOMETHING BORROWED, SOMETHING BLUE: LESSONS LEARNED DURING A SERVICE-LEARNING EXPERIENCE IN THE GULF COAST.
- Authors
CORNELL, SEAN R.; WOODLIEF, VERONICA
- Abstract
The article focuses on a service-learning and community-enrichment program called Alternative Fall Break that was developed at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania. The project's objectives were based on helping the coastal communities recover from an environmental disaster caused by the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010 and giving students a chance to explore sociocultural, economic, and political aspects of environmental issues. The value of transformative educational experiences in terms of community spirit, compassion for others, community development, and civic responsibility is discussed.
