- Title
SIX READINGS IN A RECENT EDITION OF CONGREVE'S COMEDIES.
- Authors
Mckenzie, D. F.
- Abstract
The article offers a review of "The Comedies of William Congreve," edited by Anthony G. Henderson, but to press the case for a little more bibliographical exactitude in the editing of texts for series such as the present one. The general editor's claim is that they are "soundly edited by scholars in the field" but the publisher's format leaves little room for the evidence required to substantiate a claim of soundness; and the publication schedule doubtless offers little incentive to editors to take up the laborious and time-consuming task of detailed collation. The present edition of Congreve, for example, relies on the collations made by Herbert Davis for his collection of the plays.
