- Title
Ginsberg's Inferno: Dante and "Howl".
- Authors
Meyers, Jeffrey
- Abstract
The article critiques Allen Ginsberg's poem "Howl." It explores the structure of "Howl" that roughly corresponds to that of Dante Alighieri's "The Divine Comedy" where Section 1 contains a long series of laments starting with the pronoun "who" Section 2 which condemns a society symbolized by the Canaanite fire god Moloch and Section 3 where Ginsberg pays homage to catatonia. It notes Ginsberg's use of Dante's scholastic philosophy as the foundation of his own poem.
