- Title
Denmark's Ugly Ducklings.
- Authors
Allen, Julie K.
- Abstract
The article compares European, mainly German, and Danish opinions of silent film actress Asta Nielsen and literary critic Georg Brandes in order to examine the ways in which Danish culture and national identity were understood both in Denmark and abroad. The author highlights the role of Danish conservatism and provincial culture in the two figures' lack of popularity within their own country. In this sense, the author examines Brandes' criticism of Christianity, support for women's rights, and other liberal causes, as well as Nielsen's exotic appearance.
