- Abstract
The article focuses on the concept of denomination and the role of theology in theory. Considerable research had been reported on the relationship between clergy theology and their positions on social issues. Much less scholarly work has been undertaken regarding the other two independent variables, that is, value orientation and denomination. The concept of denomination seems the most logical contribution from the specialty of religion to the bedrock variable of social structure in the behavioral science generally. The scant attention to denomination among those working in the sub-field of religion seems to support the conclusion that religion was one of the most poorly developed specialties in sociology. What denomination is for social structure, theology can have the same connection with ideology. More attention has been devoted to theology than to denomination. Concerns with theology usually focus upon its proper place in the causal path. Probably a limited number of basic patterns of viewing the world, that is, ideologies, are possible. These basic patterns are continually part of the general cultural milieu. A crucial issue for ideology which makes theology so central is the question of why mankind suffers.
