- Abstract
Mental health is a vital component of human well-being, transcending mere absence of mental illnesses. This study addresses the importance of mental health in the context of Brazilian public health, highlighting the challenges faced and the strategies adopted to promote a more comprehensive and effective care. The evolution of mental health care in Brazil is marked by significant milestones, reflecting a paradigm shift from a predominantly hospital-centered approach to a comprehensive model, in line with the principles of universality, equity, and comprehensiveness of the Unified Health System. In the struggle against the main obstacles in mental health care, such as the lack of adequate training among first-level healthcare professionals, the concept of matrix support was introduced, aiming to integrate mental health care into the first level of health care with specialists who can, even remotely, support the clinical management of the individual's singular therapeutic project. The importance of a multidisciplinary team in mental health care and the constant struggle for individuals with difficult management to have access to quality service provision are emphasized.
