- Abstract
Family businesses contribute to the development and addition of value in the economy and society, in a significant way, as a large part of the enterprises are formed by family businesses. Family businesses are ventures in which business management is carried out by members of the same family, in which the main founder passes command of the company to his heir and future successor, with the aim of continuing the family business. However, it is necessary to be aware of the effects that the succession process can cause, if it is not carried out in a planned manner, it can cause vulnerability in the company, and consequently conflicts, which can even lead to the closure of the business. Succession is a complex process, which will determine the future of the company, through the transfer of responsibilities, knowledge and management to the new family member between different generations. Therefore, advance and well-prepared planning is extremely important in these organizations. In this way, the present work aimed to understand how family businesses are formed, and the importance of the succession process in these companies and the challenges faced in succession, identifying the advantages and disadvantages that are encountered through the succession process in grassroots enterprises. familiar. Furthermore, the methodology of this research was characterized as a qualitative approach, of an exploratory nature, using the case study method, in which data collection was carried out through articles and through semistructured interviews with managers of organizations in the city. from Viçosa do Ceara. In which, the research problem sought answer: What are the advantages and disadvantages of succession in family businesses in the city of Viçosa-CE, based on the decisions made throughout the succession process? The results obtained observed the importance of implementing the succession process in family businesses, as well as the advantages and disadvantages found in the business environment, reported by the interviewees. With this, it is possible to conclude that the lack of planning and training aimed at choosing what to do can impact business development, potentially triggering conflicts, where personal and professional interests need to be separated in the company, ensuring more chances of continuing the family legacy.
