- Abstract
The most common causes of cancer pain are not due to tumours, but rather to the consequences of cancer treatment, including systemic chemotherapy (vinca alkaloids, taxanes, platinum-based compounds, epothilones, etc.). These drugs can induce painful neuropathy, a dose-limiting side effect that can severely affect the quality of life of cancer patients. In this paper, we review the clinical and laboratory findings on the characteristics of chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain and present a schema explaining the underlying mechanisms.
