- Abstract
Pupils of immigrant background are highly likely to attend school located in a disadvantaged neighborhood. In Montreal, two communities are particularly affected, namely students coming from North Africa and the Caribbean/West Indies. These students, once they reach secondary school, present a distinct academic and family profile. However, we know little of what characterize these students when they are in primary school. To contribute to knowledge advancement in this area, this study compares two groups of students whose parents are born in North Africa (n = 98) and in the Caribbean/West Indies (n = 101), with regard to their academic engagement and achievement, to their parents' involvement in monitoring their school progress, and to the socio-demographic characteristics of their families. These two groups were compared to a group of students whose parents and grandparents are born in Canada (n = 97). The results of the comparative analyses (ANOVA) suggest that there are differences between the three groups in terms of school engagement and achievement, parental involvement in monitoring school progress, and socio-demographic characteristics. These results contribute to a better knowledge of the realities of these students and to the identification of relevant possible solutions.
