- Abstract
In order to evaluate the safety of pentacyclic triterpenoids (PTs) as feed additives, the traditional teratogenicity test in rats was conducted. During 7 to 15 days after conception, Wistar rats were given 1.25, 2.50, 5.00 g/kg BW PTs by gavage, distilled water as normal control and cyclophosphamide as positive control. The teratogenic effect of the rats was evaluated by the teratogenic rate, the average rate of live fetal malformation, and fetal development. The results showed that the behavior of pregnant rats in each dose group was normal during the whole experiment, and no poisoning or death was observed. There were no significant differences in the absorption rate, stillbirth rate, teratogenesis rate, average live birth abnormality rate and maternal teratogenesis rate between each dose group and the control group. It indicated that PTs had no significant teratogenic effect on Wistar rats.
