The article reports that mining companies from several countries are planning to explore mineral deposits in the Lapland region that stretches across several Nordic countries which have become more accessible due to the diminishing polar ice caps. Topics discussed include the risks of such explorations according to environmentalists, the number of mining permit applications submitted as of 2014 and the potential economic benefits that the initiatives can bring to Finland.
