- Abstract
This study aims to investigate the impact of teaching by using a gamification-based mobile application on the attitude toward self-learning among fourth-grade students in Oman during COVID-19 pandemic. A quasi-experimental pre-post research design was used. The sample consisted of 108 fourth-grade students; of which 55 students were selected for the experimental group, and 53 students were selected for the control group. A mobile application known as 'Dr. Science' was designed based on the principles of the gamification approach, and was implemented for the experimental group. Additionally, a scale of attitude toward selflearning was implemented as a pre and posttest for both study groups, with a reliability coefficient of (0.88). Results revealed a statistically significant difference in the posttest between the two groups in favor of the experimental group. On the other hand, there was no statistically significant difference attributed to gender. The study also concluded that there was no statistically significant interaction between the teaching method and gender in the posttest. The study recommended encouraging science educators to design mobile applications based on the principles of the gamification approach to support students' attitude toward self-learning particularly during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
