- Title
Ethical Issues for Judges Attending and Presenting at Conferences.
- Authors
Pitel, Stephen G. A.
- Abstract
Should judges attend conferences? Should they give presentations at conferences? The predictable answer, as a matter of first impression, is "it depends". The answer depends on various aspects of the particular conference, such as who is organizing it, who is paying for it, who else is attending, what topics are being covered, and what hospitality is provided. A related issue is the degree of guidance judges should have in answering these questions. Is the current guidance sufficient or would judges benefit from more assistance in making ethical decisions? The aim of this article is to offer an analysis of the ethical issues involved in judges attending and presenting at conferences. In doing so, it can provide some assistance for judges, at a minimum by drawing attention to issues that might otherwise be overlooked.
