- Abstract
The aim of this review article is to describe the problems of life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) of road projects and identify the benefits of using such analysis in road infrastructure management - with particular focus on pavement condition management. While the discussed concept becomes increasingly important in international scientific literature and engineering practice, it is still rarely used in the works of Polish road engineering specialists. Due to the broad scope of the subject matter and the complexity of the method itself, the article is limited to several chosen illustrative problems. The scope of road infrastructure management is defined; the importance of applying project management approach to newly designed infrastructure is also stressed. The presented description of the life cycle of a road includes aspects related to circular economy and risk management. It is also demonstrated that LCCA is useful in solving problems associated with selection of the best cost variant, taking into account the division into primary cost categories, i.e. road user costs and road agency costs. Examples of use of LCCA in infrastructural projects are also presented. Literature review indicates that this method may be successfully used in various applications related to road asset management. The primary benefits of its use are associated with practical aspects of cost-effectiveness assessment of the compared project variants.
