- Abstract
This article posits that the current focus on the concepts of Eros (life instinct) and Tânatos (death instinct) are tied to an emerging Brazilian cinematography, thematically linked to contemporary malaise. These concepts would allude to an anachronistic “modern subjectâ€, who rejects contemporary cultural mores and conservative ideology regarding the dynamics and power relations of the labor market, sexuality, and family structure, in order to opt for experimentation. Praia do Futuro (2014), Pela Janela (2017) and Beira-Mar (2018), among many other films, illustrate this shift.
