- Abstract
The objective of the present study was to assess the effect of nitrogen fertilization on Guinea Grass (Panicum maximum Jacq.) cv. Tanzania seed yield and quality. The experiment was carried out under rainfall conditions in 2001 in Tejupilco, State of México, Mexico, (18° 54′ N, 100° 08′ W; 1,320 m asl). Treatments were five Nitrogen doses (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg ha-1), in a randomized complete block design, with four replicates. Variables evaluated were: total seed yield (TSY), pure seed yield (PSY), number of panicles per square meter, panicle length, branches per panicle, number of seeds produced and harvested per panicle, 1000-seed weight, physical purity and germination. Nitrogen fertilization increased both TSY and PSY (P<0.01), and the highest yields (26.6 and 23.7 kg ha-1 , respectively) were obtained when 100 kg N ha-1 were applied. Panicles per square meter, panicle length, branches per panicle, number of seeds produced and harvested per panicle increased in response to N fertilization (P<0.01). Number of panicles was the yield component which showed a greater association with TSY and PSY, with r values of 0.7894 and 0.7684, respectively. Seed physical purity also increased with nitrogen fertilization (P<0.05). 1,000- seed weight and germination of harvested seed were not affected significantly by any of the treatments (P>0.05). It can be -1 concluded that the highest Guinea Grass seed yield was obtained when fertilized with 100 kg N ha-1.
