- Abstract
The freshwater fish communities of the Ba' Kelalan Highland, located 1000 m above sea level were studied at nine selected stations along the Sungai Kelalan and its tributaries. A total of 214 individual samples from 24 species of fishes belonging to eight families was recorded from the survey. The Cyprinidae represented the major fish family, comprising 80.4% of the total number of the collection. The genus Gastromyzon, and species Barbodes collingwoodii, Hampala bimaculata and Nematabramis borneensis which are endemic to Borneo and commercially valuable exotic fish, such as Tor duoronensis and T. tambroides were also found in the study. The physicochemical water parameters such as water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and conductivity among stations showed that this area has a good quality river system. All of specimens caught were native to Borneo except four species, Oreochromis mossambicus, O. niloticus, Tilapia zillii and Cyprinus carpio which were identified as the introduced species in the river. Thus, the introduction of non-native fish species in the Sungai Ba' Kelalan systems may potentially threaten the biodiversity of indigenous fish assemblages in the area.
