- Abstract
The loss of biodiversity through the extinction of species through deforestation and other practices that cause irreversible destruction of ecosystems, such as overfishing, has been occurring globally in increasing numbers. Guidelines agreed under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) recommend the establishment of protected areas as a strategic alternative to biodiversity loss. The System of Conservation Units of the State of Tocantins reflects the Brazilian scenario and other tropical regions, with increasing levels of threats, associated with low knowledge on biodiversity and incipient management effectiveness. In this article some aspects of the implementation of the Cantão State Park are analyzed, analyzing the point of view of the surrounding populations about the process of consolidation of the unit. Capture fishing is a global problem with increased inventory loss. Local fishermen perceive the importance of conservation of the natural environments of the park as maintainers of the fishing stocks of the region, however, they are excluded from the processes of implementation of the unit. The adoption of longterm strategies focused on management excellence and the establishment of processes to evaluate implementation progress, which includes stakeholder participation, are proposed to ensure the consolidation of the park.
